The NOVOFER Foundation for Technical and Intellectual Creation, under the patronage of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the National Office for Research and Technology, Károly Molnár (Minister without portfolio in charge of Science, Research and Innovation) and József Pálinkás (President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), announce a competition for young researchers who have already made a significant contribution to scientific fields inspired by the achievements of Dennis Gabor (e.g., optics, laser technology, medical imaging). Applicants should not be older than 35 years when submitting the application; applicants having a Ph.D. degree or participating in Ph.D. programmes hold an advantage.

The International Dennis Gabor Award (IDGA) aims to inspire young scientists to produce outstanding scientific discoveries suitable for practical applications, and also to motivate co-operation among researchers of different nationalities.

The Award includes a 130 mm-diameter pure silver medal illustrating a hologram of Dennis Gabor’s portrait, and a prize of 10,000 Euros. One applicant from Hungary and one from abroad will be chosen for the award by the International Awards Committee.  

The application, written in English, should contain the following:

-         Data sheet (downloadable at http://www.novofer.hu/alapitvany ) indicating the name, date and place of birth, qualification, workplace, position, address, phone- and fax number, e-mail address of the applicant; and the name, qualification, affiliation, position, address, phone- and fax number, e-mail address of the advisors providing letters of recommendations (see below).

-         Curriculum vitae of the applicant.

-         List of publications, noting their impact factors and number of independent citations, or list of patents, noting their parameters for successful utilization

-         Concise summary of research and innovation results in at most 1 or 2 pages.

-         Copies of 10 major papers or patents written by the applicant.

-         Letters of recommendation from two researchers / professors, acknowledged experts in their scientific areas. 

The application should be submitted in electronic format - (scanned) PDF only - to  the address alapitvany@novofer.hu and baranyi@sztaki.hu ). The subject of the email should be “International Dennis Gabor Award”. 

Applicants will be notified of the receipt of the application within one week.Applications introducing multi-disciplinary scientific achievements are highly preferred by the International Awards Committee.

- Deadline for submission: April 30, 2009

- Notification of applicants on decision: September 20, 2009., extended new date October 30.

- Award Ceremony: December, 2009
